The King of Late Night officially launches on YouTube
In the words of classic sidekick Ed McMahon, “Heeeeeeerrrre's Johnny!” The original king of late night has finally come to YouTube on the official “Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” channel. Before Jimmy Kimmel and Conan O’Brien took over late night’s most prestigious timeslot, Carson defined the genre—paving the way for future after-hours talkers.
As host of "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" from 1962-1992, Carson gave millions of viewers a unique perspective into the lives and personalities of entertainers and newsmakers of the day. Johnny delivered hysterical monologues, welcomed megastars like Frank Sinatra and Betty White to his couch, and introduced the world to then newcomers like Jim Carrey, Madonna and Ellen DeGeneres.

Each weekday, we at YouTube Trends take a look at the most interesting videos and cultural phenomena on YouTube as they develop. We want take a moment to highlight some of what we've come across this week:

YouTube brings you Lollapalooza live all weekend
Here at YouTube we love putting you in the front row of amazing concert experiences, from Coachella to Jane’s Addiction. Starting at 11:30am PT today we’ll be livestreaming the 20th anniversary Lollapalooza music festival with dozens of the best performances, brought to you by Dell and AMD. We’ll also have a host of your favorite YouTube stars on location, reporting behind-the-scenes throughout the weekend.
What can you expect? We kick off the day with British sensations The Vaccines, before the Smith Westerns play a homecoming set in their native Chicago at 1:30pm. Don’t miss Bright Eyes at 4:30pm and then see a little band called Coldplay round up the evening starting at 6:15pm.

NHÀ VĂN VÀ GIẢI THƯỞNG (2)

Thiên hạ đang ồn ào quanh danh sách đề cử giải thưởng Hồ Chí Minh và giải thưởng Nhà nước Việt Nam
Lớp nhà văn “chống Pháp” với các ông Nguyễn Minh Châu, Nguyễn Khải,Nguyên Ngọc, Ma văn Kháng, Anh Đức, Nguyễn Quang Sáng…tạo thành dòng chủ lưu trong nền văn học cách mạng, nhưng tác phẩm của mấy ông xem ra chọn mãi cũng khó kiếm ra cái nào để đưa vào bảng vàng , bia đá.
Lớp nhà văn “chống Mỹ” như Đỗ Chu, Chu Lai, Nguyễn thị Ngọc Tú, Vũ thị Thường, Nguyễn thị Như Trang… thì xem ra kiếm cho được một tác phẩm tiêu biểu để “còn lại mãi với non sông” thì e rằng lại càng …khó hơn .
Tuy nhiên, tất cả những nhà văn “có phiếu bé ngoan” trên đây đều đã được nhận giải thưởng từ cấp quốc gia lên tới cấp Hồ Chí Minh cả rồi, chẳng có còn sót một ai. Vậy là cứ đánh trống gọi tên mà trao giải đã thành chuyện thường ngày ở Hội nhà văn Việt Nam, chỉ có điều phải làm kheo khéo, bốc cho thơm tác phẩm của mấy anh đã có tên trong danh sách nhận thưởng cấp trên đã duyệt là OK. Còn cái chuyện chọn tác giả chứ không chọn tác phẩm thì ta hiểu ngầm với nhau thôi, chớ có công khai nói ra, nhạy cảm chính trị mà .
Còn nhớ thời ông Chủ tịch Hội nhà văn VN Hữu Thỉnh còn được ngồi họp quốc hội, mấy ông nghị tỏ vẻ ta đây am hiểu, ‘dạy đĩ vén váy”, huỵch toẹt ra rằng cần phải chọn “tác phẩm” mà trao giải chứ không cần chọn “tên nhà văn “ thì có … bẽ mặt mấy anh lãnh đạo Hội nhà văn không kia chứ ?
Thế là lập tức nhà thơ Hữu Thỉnh, Tổng thư ký Hội, Tổng biên tập báo Văn Nghệ, đại biểu quốc hội tỉnh Bến Tre vội xông lên diễn đàn chối lia lịa :” Không không, xưa nay chúng tôi vẫn trao giải thưởng theo…tác phẩm đấy chớ…”. Rồi sợ rằng đa số các quý vị đại biểu quốc hội xuất thân tầng lớp công nông, văn hoá có hạn, không hiểu rõ ý mình , đồng chí Hữu Thỉnh lại nôm na giải thích :” đã ăn trứng thì khỏi cần gặp gà mái…”.
Thực ra cái ý này cũng không phải của đồng chí Hữu Thỉnh mà là của nhà văn Trung Quốc Tiền Trung Thư. Ông này nổi tiếng đến mức rất đông học giả ở Bắc Kinh xếp hàng xin được gặp mặt ông. Nhưng cái nhà ông Tiền này không muốn mình bị biến thành một điểm tham quan du lịch nên đã từ chối bằng một câu nổi tiếng :” Xin lỗi quý vị, các quý vị đã ăn trứng thì không cần đi tìm gặp gà mái…”.
Mượn câu chuyện này, ông nghị kiêm nhà thơ Hữu Thỉnh muốn nói rằng cứ chọn tác phẩm mà trao giải là được rồi, khỏi phải xét hỏi đến tác giả làm gì . Nhưng than ôi, nếu đồng chí Tổng thư ký Hội nhà văn tiến hành trao giải theo kiểu “chọn trứng” chứ không chọn “gà mái” thì lấy đâu ra tác phẩm mà trao nhiều giải đến thế. Là vì cứ căn cứ vào tình hình văn học nước ta ngần ấy năm qua, thì trứng chẳng có mấy mà “gà mái” cũng chẳng đào đâu ra , nhìn đi nhìn lại toàn thấy mấy bác… gà sống thiến . Bởi thế thì xin lại cứ trao giải theo lối chọn “bé ngoan” vậy chứ còn biết làm sao. Nhưng chọn theo kiểu này là ta…hiểu ngầm với nhau thôi, đừng có nói toẹt ra như thế. Hoá nên đồng chí Hữu Thỉnh phải mượn lời ông Tiền Trung Thư để mà rửa mặt cho các nhà văn Việt Nam :”Chúng tôi, những nhà văn, chỉ cần mang danh hiệu đó là đủ tự thấy cao quý rồi, chúng tôi – những con gà mái, chúng tôi chỉ cần đẻ trứng cho thiên hạ, ngoài ra không cần bất cứ danh hiệu nào hết .”.
Chết nỗi chẳng hiểu có rõ thâm ý của “thủ trưởng tổng biên tập “ Hữu Thỉnh không mà Toà soạn báo Văn Nghệ nhân cơ hội đồng chí đi vắng, cho đăng ngay một bài đòi…danh hiệu cho nhà văn của Ngôn Thanh có cái tựa nảy lửa rằng “ Nhà văn có được nhận danh hiệu nghệ sĩ nhân dân, nghệ sĩ ưu tú không ?”. Ông Ngôn Thanh khẳng định rằng :”CÓ CHỨ, tại sao lại KHÔNG ?”. Ông đặt câu hỏi vì sao trong số hơn 700 Hội viên Hội nhà văn, từ trước tới nay chưa ai được nhận “danh hiệu cao quý” đó, trong khi bên các Hội khác như điện ảnh, sân khấu, hội hoạ…thì đầy rẫy. Mà Hội nhà văn cũng nhiều hội viên xứng đáng danh hiệu đó lắm chứ ? Ông lại dẫn Điều 58 dự thảo “Luật thi đua khen thưởng” quốc hội đang thảo luận :
Điều 56 : “ Danh hiệu “nghệ sĩ nhân dân”, “nghệ sĩ ưu tú” để tặng cho cá nhân là diễn viên, đạo diễn , chỉ đạo nghệ thuật, chỉ huy dàn nhạc, quay phim, sáng tác kịch bản, nhạc sĩ, hoạ sĩ, phát thanh viên, hoạt động trong các lĩnh vực văn hoá nghệ thuật…”
Ông Ngôn Thanh lập luận rằng mặc dầu không có hai chữ “nhà văn” nhưng trong điều 56 có bốn chữ “ sáng tác kịch bản”. Ông viết :” Thử hỏi “nhà sáng tác kịch bản” với “nhà sáng tác văn” có gì khác nhau mà một bên thì được ưu ái còn một bên khoanh tay ngồi chờ mấy chục năm nay ….”.
Sợ chưa thuyết phục, ông Ngôn Thanh còn tra Đại tự điển Hán Việt :” Nghệ sĩ là người chuyên sáng tác hoặc biểu diễn trong ngành nghệ thuật” còn “ Nhà văn là người chuyên sáng tác văn xuôi…” và kết luận :” Thế là rõ rồi. Cả trong luật , cả trong tự điển, anh nhà văn đều được thừa nhận là nhà chuyên sáng tác. Thế thì còn băn khoăn gì nữa không ghi rõ ngay vào Điều khoản 56 Luật thi đua khen thưởng hai chứ “Nhà văn” bên cạnh các nghệ sĩ khác để được xem xét danh hiệu cao quý ấy…”
Ối cụ Nguyễn Du ôi, tam bách dư niên hậu…ba trăm năm sau, cụ có biết rằng con cháu cụ đã viện dẫn cả đại tự điển, cả điều luật ra để tranh cho được cái danh hiệu “nhà thơ – nghệ sĩ nhân dân…”. Khẩu khí con cháu như vậy trách gì mà chẳng tìm ra “trứng đâu” mà chỉ toàn thấy…”gà sống thiến…”. Tuy nhiên, biết đâu, nhờ có “Luật thi đua,khen thưởng” quy định rõ “nhà văn cũng được xếp cùng “con hát” và cũng được xét tặng “danh hiệu Nghệ sĩ ưu tú” và “ nghệ sĩ Nhân dân”, phong trào “thi đua sáng tác” của 1000 hội viên Hội nhà văn VN do vậy mà trở nên sôi nổi, phát triển mạnh mẽ và rộng khắp tạo nên những thành quả rực rỡ trong nền văn học cách mạng cũng nên ? Biết đâu đấy. Vậy mong rằng Quốc hội sớm ban hành “Luật thi đua- khen thưởng”, trong đó có bổ sung chức danh “nhà văn” để họ còn hăng say ngồi vào bàn sáng tác nên những tác phẩm đồ sộ , xứng đáng với thời đại…kinh tế thị trường theo định hướng xã hội chủ nghĩa.

My Morning Jacket takes to the homepage today with a curation of some of their favorite videos. We’re still over the moon about the amazing clip from a Jim Henson short they chose, which is so beautifully edited it feels like music, even though it’s not. The band also shows a marked predilection for jazz and Marvin Gaye, which is hard to argue with. And in honor of their participation in the Lollapalooza webcast later this week, they premiere their video for “Holdin On To Black Metal” with us today.

In recent years, we’ve seen urban and electronic music circle the globe and shape-shift everywhere it landed. Miami Bass and old-school hip-hop headed to Brazil and became baile funk; house music headed to South Africa and became kwaito. Dance music trickled down to Angola and became kuduro. A few years ago, M.I.A. grabbed headlines for tapping into this rich vein of global funk. Today we showcase bands who are picking up where she left off, marrying their local sounds to hip-hop and electronic source material.
Toro y Moi “How I Know” video premiere
And last (but by no means least!), we debut a brand-new video from the genre-evading indie/psych/chillwave phenom Toro y Moi (aka Chaz Bundwick). “How I Know” is easily one of the best songs off of Bundwick’s lauded Underneath The Pines, a track that marries his gauzy vocals with damaged Burt Bacharach-esque pop and a palpable sense of longing. Put it together with a video that references movies like Goonies, Poltergeist, Ghostbusters and Victorian ghost stories, and you have pure genius. The video was directed by Jordan Kim, whose wonderful animation work you might know from the hipster kids show Yo Gabba Gabba.
